THIS SILENCE
This our silence, watched over by god
you, from afar, with incisive look,
with those so clear eyes when you smiled
and a joy which we all shared.
We also thought it and you fill us
with the quietness of placid depths,
of names, of places, of voices which do not change.
Everything, by remembering, makes you more accessible to us,
and it's as if a gentle wind asks a question
which we can respond only by looking at you.
You were short lived among us, and now
you are a trunk that grows alone on the shore
of our making and unmaking of each day.
No storm can tear you away,
and if one day the wind of oblivion would blow,
when you straighten again, all colours will break out
and we will feel you much more closely
watched over as always by this our silence
from your distant light.
