"YOU WHO ARE ABLE TO, DO SOMETHING"

Manifesto for the involvement of Political Parties in the Prevention and Reduction of Road Traffic Accidents
Finally, the effort of 11 Organizations: ASPAYM, Astac Barcelona, Catalunya Camina, CONC (CCOO), UGT, Catalan Tax Federation, Foundation of the Guttmann Institute, the PtP, Segle XXI, TRACE and ourselves, P(A)T - AP(A)T, has borne fruit. From now onwards, the good citizenship of all people should support this initiative (send your support to Manifest: manifest@pat-apat.org). Despite the current situation in which the Manifest is limited to the Catalonia Region, we are confident it will extend to the whole of Spain, for the 2004 General Elections. This is because, a reduction in accidents requires the partitipation of the Congress of Deputies, and a rewriting of the Penal Code, for a new Road Safety Act, taking into account the current situation. The response has been mainly led by the Political Parties.

The DGT (Directorate General of Traffic) has launched a special control at the (motor racing) circuit of Jerez
On the occasion of Spanish Grand Prix Championship, held at Jerez on the 10th and 11th of May, the Directorate General of Traffic began a special control for monitoring, which focuses primarily on the control of dangerous behavior, dangerous driving , speeding and alcohol checks.
We commend the initiative-we do not know if it has a precedent- which is sure to obtain a reduction in unnecessary deaths and countless family dramas (it would be worthwhile to give statistics of accidents, for example, around the circuit, for people to see). P(A)T commends the vision of the DGT, in the prevention of dangerous behaviors that often end in tragedy, for the only reason of emulating their idols on the racetrack. We hope that this attitude spreads to other Spanish Regions where there are race tracks which attract large crowds, so that, especially at night, and in the surrounding neighborhood, these juvenile outbursts of imitation will cease to happen.

Catalan Foundation for Road Safety
On 8th May 2003, the Catalan Foundation for Road Safety was oficially presented to Society. Its patrons are: the Chamber of Commerce of Barcelona, Assistencial Club, Fédération d'Autoescoles de Catalunya, Manresa Montepío drivers, Siguem Amics Conduint (Lets be friends as we drive), UCEAC (Union Catalana d'Entitats Asseguradores i Reasseguradores-UNESPA) and P(A)T; thus begins another important initiative in favour of Road Safety and Prevention of Traffic Accidents on another front, with many interesting projects, of which we will keep you informed.
