GENDER PERSPECTIVE ALSO IN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Moving towards mobility without gender discrimination.

Thanks to raising awareness of the gender perspective in mobility, it has also been possible to advance in the prevention of violence in public transport, with the application of the Strategic Mobility and Gender Plan of Catalonia.

Specifically, 3 measures stand out to be developed:

  • Prevention and warning system: With the “Lilac Button” project in the apps of public transport operators, the telephone number enabled for this purpose is contacted directly. This project has been developed after the success of the pilot test with AI, within the framework of the Technical Solution for safe routes in mobility. In addition, video surveillance cameras are being installed and an anonymous mailbox has been set up for complaints of sexual violence suffered or detected on public transport.
  • Community awareness about sexist and LGBTI-phobic violence: With campaigns on sexual harassment and the prevention protocol disseminated on public transport and other channels, the aim is also to improve the situation. In addition, training on sexist violence is being carried out for staff, including security, and advertising is promoted that respects non-discrimination rules.
  • Tools for transforming space to make sexual harassment more difficult:  With this objective, a map of the infrastructure of the public transport network is being prepared with a gender perspective in preventing situations of sexual harassment in public transport. In addition, a system of on-demand stops is also being promoted on bus routes that travel through less crowded areas.

An undoubtedly necessary initiative that shows the lack of safety of women and LGTB+ groups in public transport and, in general, in public spaces.

At P(A)T we are sure that it will help generate more equitable mobility that offers the same opportunities to men and women, so that they are not forced to choose other means for the mere fact of feeling insecure. They are small steps that we hope will lead to great progress.
