Tribute to Ole Thorson on the Second Anniversary of His Passing
On March 31, it will be two years since Ole Thorson left us, and at P(A)T, we want to honor the extraordinary human being behind the expert
Ole Thorson was not only a widely respected figure in road safety and sustainable mobility—instantly recognizable by his trademark bow tie and unwavering dedication to creating safer, more humane environments for all—but above all, he was a warm, humble, and deeply committed person.
Throughout nearly his entire professional life, much of which he devoted to P(A)T, Ole offered heartfelt support to families who had lost loved ones in road crashes. His activism was rooted in empathy and conviction: every victim mattered, and every life saved was a personal triumph. Those of us who had the privilege of knowing him remember his kindness, humility, and endless willingness to help. Whether speaking to journalists, colleagues, students, or public officials, he was always a calm, wise, and generous voice.
Ole’s work was grounded in data and evidence, championing innovative measures that are now part of mainstream thinking—lower speed limits, paid on-street parking, prioritizing public transport. He was a visionary who, long before it was popular, imagined cities designed for people walking and cycling, not dominated by cars. He was a pioneer of active, sustainable mobility.
His humanity, wisdom, and technical legacy have left a lasting impact on our organization and on everyone who crossed his path. Ole believed deeply in justice and in our shared responsibility to protect life on the road. He often reminded us that most road crashes are preventable, and that behind each number in a statistic, there is a family forever changed. That moral clarity continues to guide us. He showed us that working toward safer, more sustainable mobility is above all an act of respect and love for others.
Two years on, we still feel his absence—but his spirit lives on in P(A)T’s work and in every initiative we carry forward in pursuit of road safety. We honor his memory by walking in his footsteps, with the same dedication and heart that he passed on to us. Ole Thorson remains a powerful example of professionalism, foresight, and tireless civic commitment—leaving an indelible mark on road safety and sustainable mobility in our country.
